In 1998 Tim received the Andrew Milne Award for
Jazz and wrote "Soundtracks" for the quartet with Phillip
Sheppard on cello, which was broadcast on Radio 3 in 1999.
Musicians
Dave Barry - Drums
came to prominence with Mike Westbrook's orchestra
and other ensembles and has appeared with most of the performers
on the London scene including Don Weller, Pete King and John Critchenson.
A drummer of consummate technique and great musicality. Hear his
solo on the end of "One View of Annet" on "Silence
Between Waves".
Pete Jacobsen - Piano
Everyone in the London Jazz World knows what an
extraordinary talent Pete was, but the press reviews always used
words like "unsung hero" and "underrated". Apart
from his excellent piano solo CD "Ever Onward", he recorded
and toured with Pete King, Bobby Wellins, Don Weller, Barbara Thompson
as well as appearances with Level 42.
Arnie Somogyi - Double Bass
recently featured on a BBC Radio 4 programme touring
his native Hungary with Hungarian jazz players, Arnie has his own
quartet "Cold Cherry Soup" (CD recording just released
of the same name), and has appeared with George Benson, Bobby Hucherson,
James Moody, Claire Martin, Clark Tracey, Annie Ross, Steve Grossman
and Ian Ballamy.
What
the Press Say
'Whitehead
is conveniently bracketed as an expert post-bop tenorist, but this
set reveals his eye to be on wider horizons...Whitehead glides ethereally
into phrases like a jazzier Jan Garbarek at time, although the playing
is often stronger. An affecting 80 minutes of contemporary music'
John Fordham
(The Guardian)
'The
youthful exuberance always present in Tim Whitehead's playing makes
it hard to credit that he first became a professional jazz musician
in 1976. His technique and composing abilities, however, have matured
over the years and this album is an impressive showcase for his
multiple talents. There are many fine tenor players on the current
British jazz scene, but Tim Whitehead is undoubtedly one of the
best we have.'
Peter Lund - Crescendo
Jazz Music
'Amid the
crowd of anonymous, garrulous and hard-edged tenor saxophonists,
Tim Whitehead's music is marked by a sense of grace and economy.
For evidence look no further than his current Jazz House album,
Silence Between Waves, recorded both live and in the studio at Ronnie
Scott's last year. Overlooked in the rush to find fashionable new
tenor names who can double as mannequins in the glossy magazines,
Whitehead played with the now-defunct Loose Tubes big band before
forming his current quartet in 1991 with Pete Jacobsen, another
lyrical but unfashionable voice, at the piano.'
